December in the Garden

12.18.2010

While the garden may be dormant this month, we have certainly been busy. December 4th was the Mary Woodward Bazaar, where the garden booth sold calenders, cards, pine cone bird feeders, planters, and beautiful holiday decorations. Thank you to all of you who came out to support us!

During our recess garden sessions we’ve been making holiday decorations from plant cuttings as well as more pine cone bird feeders since they were so popular at the bazaar. These were definitely popular with the kids too as they got to slather the pine cone with peanut butter and then roll it in seeds. Our hands came out looking like bird feeders too, but it was a lot of fun.

Making these feeders was one of three projects we did last week with the fifth graders and kindergartners. These classes team up throughout the year for various activities, so we thought that it would be a good project to do before they left for Christmas break. While some pairs made a pine cone, others strung pretzels on string or threaded cranberries and popcorn for garlands. We strung these garlands into multiple long strands and made a plan to put them up. This Thursday we went out to one of our big trees in the garden and hung up all of our decorations to feed the local wildlife over the holidays. It was a blast, and the kids could participate in the whole process.

December is never a dull month, even when the garden is quiet. Have a safe and happy holiday season!
